Happy Memorial Day!!

Captains Log May 31 -  Happy Memorial Day to everyone!

Quite a few RV’s were leaving before we got ready to go into Bismarck this morning.  We

Veterans Cemetery

wondered if we’d be all alone for tonight!

As we leave/return the park we pass the North Dakota State Veterans Cemetery.  It’s on a hillside overlooking the Missouri River.  What better place to rest for eternity? The cemetery is huge and pristine.  Today there was a Memorial Service/Celebration.  As we left the park the line of arriving traffic was horrendous and they had the National Guard directing traffic and parking the cars.  Once we passed the cemetery there was a
stream of about 500 motorcycles.  A lot had US and other flags flying.  It was the largest parade of motorcycles we have ever seen!  It was truly inspirational!  We heard this is an annual event and it is always like this.  It was truly touching to see how many came out to be part of this special day!  All along the road into town people were parked or in their own driveways watching the brigade of vehicles passing by.  Very heart warming experience!

A handful of the 500

So on to Bismarck we went to the Keelboat Park on the Missouri River.  The boat is a replica of what was used during the trip of Lewis & Clark.  There was a Native American artsy statue, portrayal of “Go West Young Man”, and a paddlewheel boat that you can take a tour on.  Very enjoyable with a great view of Memorial Day  boaters on the river.

From there we went to the Capitol Building to see the statues of Sacagawea and a super cool statue of a buffalo made from rebar.   Then we  looked for a good lunch spot.  Found one:  The Walrus Rest

Keelboat
aurant not far from the Capitol.  The food was awesome!  Bill had a Bailey Burger, yes, another burger, and I had Pork Belly Nachos.

It was a huge platter and mostly tortilla chips so I ate

every tiny piece of meat with cheese and finely chopped

pickled peppers. There was quite a pile of chips left !

Time to head back to the RV and it’s been an entertaining afternoon.  An RV Caravan started arriving and this is not a BIG RIG Friendly RV park.  There are at least 21rv’s as they all have numbers assigned on yellow stickers.  They keep jockeying and are all being assigned curved pull thru sites but this isn’t an easy place to maneuver!

The campground was almost empty when the Caravan started

Train bridge over the Misssouri

arriving.  Mostly Class A’s and some struggling to get into the spaces towing without unhooking.  We watched a poor couple in a 5th wheel for over 30 minutes to get as level as he could with out his jacks.

We had agreed on burgers on the George Foreman before we left today so Bill will have his second burger of the day!  I have corn on the cob and will come up with some other veggie related side.
