June 2 – This morning we had a mandatory meeting at 10. Several
district personnel and the rest of the volunteers to go over safety and a
plethora of “need to know” items. It was
almost noon by the time we got home so we had our lunch and packed out bags for
work.
We heard there were storms expected today but it started out to be a
really nice day. Tourism was a bit low
but by the time we go to the VC there was a good crowd on the beach. Yeah-- we finally have ice to sell. I called the Eastern National lady to ask how
much to sell it for. So at least we’ve
added one essential to our inventory!
It was slow but we got to talk with several visitors, one couple was
very interested in what we do as they are a couple of years from retiring and
think it would be a great way to travel.
As the afternoon wore on the clouds came and went and around 3 we received
a radio call that within the hour we could expect severe rain with the
possibility of rising water. We are in a
valley in the mountains and there are signs posted all over to beware of rising
water. Another volunteer was sent down
so she and I could walk the beach and let people know. By the time we finished about half of the
beachers packed up and headed out. Later
I went out and picked up some blowing trash and brought in a pile of articles
left on the beach. It started getting
pretty dark about 4:30 so the last 5 guests decided to call it a day. The wind was picking up also. The owner of most of the pile of leftovers
came in to claim her stuff and once the parking lot was empty I radioed that
the beach was clear so we were told to go home.
So we got off an hour early today.
We did get some wind and rain but nothing too drastic. The prediction was 3 inches of rain but that
didn’t happen.
