August 12 – We only
had to clean the bathhouse since no one was leaving today so we decided to take
a little day trip once we were done and showered. I put beef stew ingredients in the crockpot
so I wouldn’t have to make dinner when we got home. We managed to be on the road by 10:30.
Skyline Drive |
We drove up to I-64
where it intersects with the Blue
Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive . We headed north on the Skyline for about 40
miles. We stopped at several overlooks
and the campground at Loft
Mountain . I was able to get 2 passport stamps for my
National Parks book. It’s a very slow
winding road and 40 miles was about all my stomach could handle. We had planned to get off at the Swift Run
Gap entrance/exit so it timed out well to exit there and go into Elkton to
lunch.
We drove around the
small town and finally decided on a local place, C and S Diner. What an excellent choice! I had the chicken fried steak special with 2
veggies and boy, was it ever good. I haven’t
had it since vacation last year. Bill
had a very tall hamburger that he also said was really good. We were happy we went with the local place
today.
The drive into Waynesboro was nice. Peaceful, with little traffic, with farms
along the road. We realized we didn’t
have time today to go to Staunton ,
so will save it for another day. We
stopped by the Bed, Bath
and Beyond and then drove on to Stuart’s Draft.
There we hit the produce stand, post office so I could mail a package to
Shiloh and then The Cheese Shop. I love that store. We got more cheese and lunch meats in
addition to fried peas and I got some wasabi peas that I know Bill will leave
alone. He was putting stuff in the cart
too: pretzels, sunflower seeds, veggie
chips, fried pie. I priced some items my
siblings like so I can see what they want me to bring back.
Bill dropped me at
Food Lion for a quick stop while he went to Hardee’s for a coke. I wasn’t long, just needed creamer, eggs and
some fruit. We did our last email check
and used the phones and headed back to Sherando where smell of the stew was so
good when I opened the door. Yum!
After dinner we took
a trash bag and walked the trail behind the amphitheatre and then back
around. We had quite a bag full of trash
when we got back. We are also getting
more birds! One of the volunteer
couples, Bill and Barb are leaving Wednesday and they gave us their big tomato
plant and a flower but I can’t remember what it is. It’s in a big hanging basket and sitting on
our picnic table.
We watched our usual
shows and read.
