Day Trip to Staunton

Somebody was cold this morning
August 15 – Ooh it was cold this morning.  Just over 60 out.  It’s still August!  When I got up Bill had moved the heater to the living room, warming it up for him.  The sun was out though and it turned out to be a really nice day, but all the campers were scurrying around in long pants and jackets when the day started.

After breakfast it didn’t take long to clean as hardly anyone used the showers last night or this morning.  This was the cleanest the ladies side has been.  When I came back I took the trash to the dumpster and “leveled out” the contents.  People don’t pitch their bags to the back of the dumpster so it starts to overflow from the front.  So we are to pitch the bags to the back of the dumpster through the side openings and make room for more.   Nasty job!  Bill raked out 2 sites so I guess it was an OK trade off.

Cool roadside attraction
We left about 11 for Staunton.  The plan was a movie and
Wilson's Pierce Arrow that he
never drove since he didn't have
a license
visit to Woodrow Wilson Birthplace and Museum.  We arrived just at the right time to see the video and take the guided tour of the Wilson Birthplace.  Then we did self guided tour of the museum.  We walked a couple of blocks down town and had a nice lunch at a recommended place, Pampered Pallet CafĂ©.  We both had broccoli cheese soup and quiche Lorraine.  They had a pretty large selection and some daily soups, desserts and quiches.  It was a nice change.

The walk back to the truck was all uphill.  Staunton is a very hilly city.  We headed to the mall and it reminded us of the one in Durango.  Not big and severely on the downswing.  So many closed stores.  Even the Regal 6 Cinema was closed.  I made a stop at Bath and Body Works and we headed back to Waynesboro.  That is apparently the closest movie to us anyway so we stopped to check the times for Monday for several movies.

We spotted a grocery, Smart Shopper, that had a parking lot full so I asked Bill to turn around so I could check it out.  It was full of people.  It’s a box store kind of place with mostly off brand but super prices.  They have a bulk food aisle and it’s run by Mennonites so they carry the good meats and cheeses.  When we checked out there were photos on the wall of their other locations, which are in PA and VA.  I’ll go back there before we leave for home for sure.

After a quick stop at Wal-Mart we headed home and stopped for diesel on the way.  Once the bags were emptied and put away I had a glass of wine and made some stuffed celery until dinner.  We just had leftovers so it was easy.

We walked our loop and chatted with some of the campers and they walked up the hill and around the group loop.  There are 5 group sites that are only for tents and there are full hookup sites for 4 volunteers.  The uphill walk was good for us.  I caught up with my journal and Bill did the dishes and we watched Burn Notice.
