August 14 – It was
nippy out this morning! The sun was out
but the air was cool. Once we finished
our cleaning duties and raked our couple of sites, I planned to make Bill a
batch of his flax/sun dried tomato crackers.
Problem! The oven wouldn’t
light. The burners wouldn’t light. WE WERE OUT OF PROPANE! I could not believe we had two empty
tanks. We knew we finished one and
thought the other was a full tank – NOT!
Look at the right and it's 2 birds, wings at the top and bottom, what's that? |
While Bill was out
talking and raking I was reading at the table and watching the birds. Today we had 5 hummers racing around and once
in a while 3 would light to eat. They
were really violent today and as I was trying to get a photo one was minding
his own business and eating and 1 was either totally attacking another or was
raping it. Until now they only flew at
each other. Maybe it was some kind of
mating ritual.
After lunch we made
a trip into Stuart’s Draft to the Ace Hardware and filled both tanks. We stopped at a thrift shop which was only
because we saw a sign for a bakery. The
bakery was closed so we didn’t get any delicious Mennonite bakery items but I
picked up a few bargains at the thrift store.
Once we installed
the tanks we both went to the laundry room and did one load while we both did
email. It’s nice when no one is there
and you have the place to yourself. By
the time we got back it was time to put my pickle steaks on for dinner. Couldn’t have done that either without the
gas. I made us a snack of goat cheese
with honey on celery. Yum! Went well with the last of my Roscato.
We did our usual
loop walk and then walked over to Loop B.
Fred and Linda were out so we sat and talked until dark. We hadn’t taken a flashlight so it’s not a
good idea to take the path through the woods so we went on the road. Bill brought in the bird feeder and we
settled in for the night. Word was it
was going to get cold, so before I went to bed I set up one of the electric
heaters on the dresser and turned it on and shut the doors off to keep us warm
for the night.
