August 27 – We were up, dressed and had breakfast in plenty of time to drive ½ mile to the meet point for our tour in the Red Bus. They really are not buses, but old time looking cars with 4 bench seats. They hold 16 but we only had 14 in our bus. It was colder than expected and looking like rain which meant we would not get to roll back the top of the bus and stand up to take photos. Bummer! It was really a cold day out. I stayed in the bus several times as it was a little rainy in addition to the chill out. The tour lasts 3 hours and we saw all of the eastern lakes, the resort, glaciers, the mountain peaks and stopped at a visitor center that took about 90 minutes to get to. The traffic is monitored but it was quite heavy today. We did several stops for photos and we did see a grizzly bear eating berries along the road.
The stop at the farthest point
has some beautiful views of snowy mountains but boy, was it windy and cold
rain. We did not dress appropriate for
the weather we had there. The
ride back covered things that were too crowded on the way up. The guide/driver was excellent and has been
spending his summers there for quite a long time. He’s retired and loves to hike there so it’s
a win-win for him.
When we got back and got some
nice photos with the bus it was time for lunch!
We ate at the little café that we started to eat in before. It had a limited menu as it was their last
day open so they were using up what meats they still had. After lunch we made a quick stop at the
grocery store but ended up not finding what I was looking for. So we headed back to the RV and started
getting things ready for leaving in the morning.
