August 2 – This was again not a good driving day. It was nice when we started out, as we stopped in Carcross so Bill could take a photo of the lake there. The bad part was ascending and descending the mountains to get into Skagway. There is ONLY one road in and out and it was a foggy, misty day once we headed up the mountain where we also had to go thru customs since we were leaving Canada again!
Well, it was foggy and misty
and some of the roads were 11 degrees steep and it was a slow, nerve racking
trip up and down the other side. There
were NO guardrails and at times I couldn’t see 6 feet in front of me or the
taillights of Dave and Donna, who we follow every day. It’s scary to know we have to go back out the
same way and I just hope the weather is clearer.
Our campground in town is
actually within walking distance to “town”.
Skagway is a small town right on the water and during the season they
get 3 cruise ships every day during the “season”. Then once the ships stop, about 85 per cent
of the people leave the town. There are
a lot of summer workers here and a lot of the locals leave for better weather
as well.
We all have pull thru sites
here and we’re here for 3 nights so everyone was happy about that. The down side is we had to fill our water
tanks before we arrived as there is no water and there is no sewer. The only thing
we have is a level site with 30Amp electric.
Once we parked and hooked up
the electric most of the group went into town.
Some had their dinner there and others, like us, were just checking out
the shops and seeing what deals there might be.
Bill and I visited the National Park here relating to the Klondike Gold
Rush back in 1898. We were here in 1998
when we flew to Alaska, rented a car for 1 ½ weeks and then took the train from
Anchorage to Seward. So we stopped here
for an afternoon and not much has changed!
The Wagonmasters had bought
our tickets for a late afternoon stage show about a “bad” guy who owned a
saloon and cheated people here. It was a
bit hokey but the 3 actors did a really good job and all had great singing
voices.
So it was a long day but
turned out to be a good day for sure!
we went salmon fishing when we were in skagway
