July 17 – Since we’re not on a tight time schedule we didn’t set the
clock. I was up at 7:30 and did what I
quietly could. Bill hasn’t been sleeping
so well with his foot and his shoulder.
We managed to leave at about 10. We
looked pretty similar to the Beverly Hillbillies as we were so packed to the
top. I could barely see out the rear
window. We had the joy of rain on and
all between Daytona and Jacksonville
and then again once we hit GA. It was looking like a replay of our trip
south! The plan was to stop at the GA
Welcome Center but it was closed so we went to the first exit and went ahead
and filled up with gas and pulled around beside their building and had our
lunch from the cooler. I would have
preferred a rest area with some shade but the next one was too far down the
road to wait for a bathroom.
It continued to rain on and off and there was a warning sign on I-95
near Savannah
of a delay ahead so Bill routed us onto a series of small roads. It was a
pleasant change from the interstate and it was a bit slower but much more
enjoyable passing through the small towns and seeing nice fields of crops and
no semis and people road raging! While
we drove Bill made our camping reservation for PA. We decided Columbia, SC
would be our overnight stop so he looked for a cat friendly motel. He was really frustrated as most of the ones
he read about had horrible reviews.
Anything from theft, to bedbugs, to hookers and roaches. Nasty!
Once we reached the outskirts of Columbia
we stopped for gas and Bill wanted me to give it a try. Actually since I paid at the pump I didn’t
really look around but once I did I told him I wasn’t comfortable spending any
quality time at that gas station. So we
drove on to a McDonald’s at an exit from the interstate and we checked in with
Kam for a friends and family stay at a Hilton.
Luckily I had my Hilton Honors number with me so she could do her thing
and then I could do my thing. They had 2
pet friendly hotels so we went with the Hampton Inn as it had a full breakfast
included. What a nice hotel. I did have to get a cart to haul up the cooler,
litter box, duffle bag, sleep machine, cat food, and more! I really didn’t want to go anywhere to eat
but the only delivery meal that either of us was interested in the phone number
was no longer in service. That’s just
our luck! So we drove across the street
to Applebee’s. I didn’t think I was very
hungry but I was and we did one of the 2 For meals. Bill had a nice steak and I had riblets. We both had a salad, steamed broccoli and
roasted potatoes. Pretty darn good at
the end of the day.
Bill
watched some TV and read and I tried AGAIN to get our Red Sox tickets on Stub
Hub with no luck. I did order my tickets
to Falling Waters and another Frank Lloyd Wright house, Kentuck Knob which is
only about 15 minutes away form Falling Waters.
I went to bed with a smile on my face!
