Bill and the big tree |
July 15 – We didn’t
really plan out our day off before going to bed and didn’t get up until 9, so
we knew we wouldn’t be going on a road trip.
We took our time with breakfast and finally decided to load our bikes on
the truck and drive to Snyders Landing and bike to Killiansburg Cave
on the towpath. We arrived and parked
and on the path we encountered a HUGE tree across the path. The ride was only 1.4 miles and we stopped
and took our photos. Bill attempted
going to the cave but it was steep and with the rain we’ve had the rocks were
slippery. He asked if I could make it
back to the truck OK as he wanted to ride the towpatch back to our camp. I assured him I could manage getting my bike
over the 2 foot high fallen tree and into the back of the truck!

Bill at the mouth of the cave |
Loading the bike was
easier that getting it over the tree but I managed. I had just gotten home and was sitting down
with a beverage when Bill arrived. He
said he saw me as I drove thru what we call The Village. He said there was another smaller tree over
the path so he called into our supervisor and she said she’d notify
maintenance.
After a rest we went
to do our duty at the campground. It
took about an hour to check all 20 sites after the weekend and there was more
trash along the road than in the campground.
The maintenance truck came as we were cleaning and brought us a box of
trash bags. They had been up to move the
trees and once they get on there are only so many places they can get a truck
off the towpath and it’s just south of us.

Bill picking berries |
We had lunch and
read a while and waited for it to cool

The berries |
down to go pick berries. We finally left about 4 and were only gone an
hour and came back with a gallon of berries, mostly raspberries. There were tons and we could have gotten a
lot more but we can only eat so many and freezer space. I did put 2 pints in the freezer and made a
2-3 serving cobbler. We made a fire in
our grill pit to grill dinner and while it got going I noticed some berries
behind our RV. Not a lot but by the time
I did the perimeter of our space I had a large cupful. We’ll definitely pick more before leave here.
