Happy Independence Day! Can we hold on to it?

July 4 – The day started off like any other day.  I dropped Bill off at Lock 38 to ride
Bill did the decorating
his bike home and I went on to Ferry Hill.  It was just Ben and me today.  He is a seasonal ranger and normally works at Williamsport at the VC there but since Susanna is off for 2 weeks he will be doing some of the duty at Ferry Hill.  It was a really slow day as we only had 8 visitors by the time I left and 3 of those were Ben’s parents and sister.  It did give me a chance to read a lot so that was OK.

Brat burgers on the grill
Once I got home Bill had vacuumed and done the dishes so
Mr. Happy Camper
we just kicked back and read and I took a nap until it was time to get started on dinner.  We built a wood fire in our grill pit and once it got going Bill grilled brat burgers and hot dogs.  I had made slaw so we had that and Bill had corn on the cob and potato salad.  I threw in some sliced tomatoes and dill pickles and Bill was once again a Happy Camper.  The burgers were really good but I didn’t touch the hot dogs.  I sat out and read my book.  When it was time to do our campground walk I told Bill I need to check this one plot of clover for a 4 leaf one and as I walked over it, wouldn’t you know I really did find one.  The last time I found one camping I pressed it in a book and then forgot which book.   We did our walk of the sites and there were a couple of grills that need cleaned out tomorrow since we didn’t bring our work tools.  Several campers came over to use our water since the pump is down.

Later when it was getting dark we went back out and each did a box of sparklers.  We have to have some kind of fireworks on the 4th.  Later we could hear them going off all over but don’t think there were any in the campground.

Bill headed to bed at 10 and I stayed up to finish my book, so I had just locked the door and finishing in the bathroom when there was a loud knock on our door after midnight.  I woke Bill from a dead sleep and told him to get the door.  One of the campers asked us to call the police as a car of kids were messing with his car and they were running though the park naked.  I got out the emergency number and called in to dispatch and as I did 2 cars went speeding down the road.  The dispatch said she was sure they’d send somebody but wasn’t acting like it was anything major and asked for our call back number.  Bill went out to let the guy know we had called and he told Bill that the first car was the kids and the other was his brother chasing them.  The kids had been in the park twice already and were using bad language around the little kids and were running naked.  So Bill went out with the guy, who had his whole family out there, as they are all here to be guests of the guy’s wedding on Saturday.  No one came after 20 minutes so Bill came back in and called again and was told someone was on the way.  The chase car had gotten close enough to get a tag number and called the police then and was told to back off as they could have a gun or he could cause them to have an accident.  The car came back and drove up the driveway beside our lot where someone lives and shortly after came back out and went the other way.  Then a state police came. The chase car driver gave the tag info to the state police and the police went in the direction the car had.  At 30 minutes into the story a law enforcement ranger arrived and he did the paperwork and got the info and sent everyone to bed.  We didn’t hear anymore noise so guess they didn’t come back or were sitting in jail some place.  Bill was not happy that it took that long for a policeman.  We are 5 miles from the closest town in WV and it’s a college town so we know there are police there and we’re 6 miles from Sharpsburg and we know they have police, so he’s going to be asking about that!

So we had some last minute 4th of July excitement after all.
