June 1 – Another month starting up and by the end of it we should be enjoying Alaska! Bill was NOT feeling good at all this morning and wanted to get tested for Covid. I hunted for the free test kits we got at home and I guess that’s where they still are! Darn! No service to find a testing facility and I was testing Melissa and she looked up where we were and sent me the info. I called the urgent care place and they said they do test and took Bill’s info and we headed over. He got right in and I took a book to read. They said it would take 30 minutes, then they let me know he was negative but they were going to do some other tests. Turned out he has the flu! His flu shot didn’t cover this variety I guess. They also ran a couple other tests and sent him with 2 scripts to get filled. One, the local Walmart doesn’t have so they sent it to LaCross, WI, our next stop. So then we went to Wal-mart and picked it up and by then it was lunchtime so we got the name of a good place from the nurses and really enjoyed out lunch at Huckleberry CafĂ©.
I think Bill was pretty
relieved it wasn’t Covid, but disappointed his flu shot didn’t do the job.
We had 3 places on our list to
visit today and sadly the one we had to skip was “Field of Dreams”. We have been there before but it’s a place I
really loved and I wanted one more time to walk out of the corn field onto the
baseball field and to run the bases again!
Oh well, it is what it is and at least Bill wasn’t so sick that we
couldn’t do that.
We crossed the Mighty
Mississippi and went to the Effigy Mounds National Park. They had a nice display and information about
mounds all over. The mounds are
scattered and a rather far walk from the building. Bill didn’t feel like making the walk but we
did see photos etc and it was better than nothing.
It’s a short drive from Effigy
Mounds to Pikes Peak State Park – no not THAT Pikes Peak. As we approached there was a sign at the road
where we were to turn that said the road was closed. Bill drove on passed and I said it looked
partial open to me, so we turned around and I made him turn down the road. There were road workers digging and moving
stuff but it looked clean on the left where the road into the other side of the
park was, so we took it. The park is
technically closed but you could park and walk to the scenic view areas of the
confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers. You could clearly see the color difference of
the water flows. We enjoyed the view and
took a few photos. There were families
using the picnic tables and enjoying their lunches. Very quiet and peaceful. Nice stop!
Going and coming back we
passed a riverboat casino long the river and I attempted to get a quick
picture. Haven’t checked yet to see if I
did. Across the road was a big PINK
ELEPHANT! I might have gotten that as
well!
We crossed back over the Mississippi
again back into Wisconsin and headed home.
We put our few purchases away and I did 2 loads of laundry.
No major cooking tonight. I went thru the canned goods I moved over from
the old RV and pitched some OLD dates and there are a few on the cusp so we’re
having chicken noodle soup and I’ll made cheese quesadillas to go with it.
I had to re-pot another of my
hydroponic tomatoes into a mason jar.
I’m hoping it does better than the one that got took cold, which by the
way, looks like it’s finally rebounding!
My basil is thriving!
Time to pick up my book for a
while and hopefully will have some interesting stuff to write about tomorrow.
Hope Bill is ge4tting better.
