Welcome to the Mississippi River!

May 31 -  We managed to get on the road by 9 this morning and then realized the gate was locked and we couldn’t get out.  There was no one really up and moving around since most of the RV’s are empty during the week.  At guy went by that took stuff to the dumpster and he said he’d let someone know we were waiting to leave.  So a guy came up on his golf cart and opened the smaller gate.  Bill was a little concerned if we could make the right turn on the small 2 lane road.  I veered as close the left side of the opening as I could and very slowly pulled out and straightened up and got out without hitting the fence or going off the road!  WHEW!

Today was all regular road driving – no interstate.  We have been seeing such beautiful country with lots of huge farms and farmhouses.  So much nicer than what we see in Florida.  There were some hilly and curvy roads but all went well as we headed to Prairie du Chien, WI and enjoyed the ride and views all the way!  No real excitement and really light traffic compared to the interstates.

Our campground, Sports Unlimited, just a walk to the Mississippi River.  The campground is about 400 sites, mostly seasonals who have single wide pre-fab units that are the size of an RV but some are 1 and a half stories.  The company owns this and a couple of marines and 3 more RV parks along the river.  And you’d think they could provide WIFI!  Only in their office / game room building!

We have a nice spot and hear and see the trains coming and going.  I counted one at 116 cards and 5 of the cars were engines.  I thought I’d hear them at night but I guess I tuned them out if they were running.

We had lunch then drove into town.  We stopped for our current grocery list at Walmart and Aldi.  The crazy. thing about this town is they have 3 round abouts coming through town, one right after the other.  So they are a block apart and there’s no real reason for it.  It was a slow process driving the motorhome thru them but no issues.

The couple next to us is from Iowa and they have a 45’ EXSPENSIVE coach that Bill looked up and runs $400,000 to $700,000.  Wow!  It’s taller too!

No WIFI, no satellite connection and no local air TV stations.  It was is a night for reading.

We had a light supper of leftovers and read for our evening entertainment.
