What is a Fiddlehead?

June 13 -  We were so glad we didn’t have to be at work until 11.  The rains started very early and hard this morning and woke me at 6 but I managed to lull back off until 9.  I had to wake Bill at 9:30 so he could shower and have breakfast.  By the time we left it was a light drizzle but picked up again later.  Bill’s main job was stopping all the incoming RV’s and sending those that were part of our large group of 30 on down to the sites and the rest into the office to check in.  He was doing traffic control since we can’t let anyone sit out on the road and block local traffic.  On the other hand, I was busy checking people in and answering the phone and cleaning.  Well, not by my self.  Barb worked with me until 2, then Joe came on.  Pam was there part of the day so we had plenty of help but sometimes it would be better with not so many bodies in the small space to work.
This is a Fiddlehead

I cooked a local vegetable for dinner tonight.  Fiddleheads.  I’d seen them twice at the store and decided to buy some and google them.  They are the sprouts of a specific kind of fern, I think elephant fern.  Whey they sprout they are in a tight circle that is supposed to look like a fiddle, therefore the name.  They taste similar to asparagus and you have to boil or steam for 15 minutes to kill any bacteria (doesn’t sound too healthy) and then if you want you can sauté them in butter and seasoning.  I just boiled them and drizzled with lemon.  They do taste like very mild asparagus and I liked them but Bill said they were OK.  I baked a huge sweet potato that we shared with a coconut oil, stevia and cinnamon “butter” and grilled pork chops.  I haven’t felt too creative about cooking as I still have  no comfort level with the convection oven.

It’s still a bit rainy out and I just alternate from the computer to my book.  Maybe tomorrow will be a better weather day!
