Touring and travelling....

June 24 -  Today’s outings were along our way to New Hampshire.  We thought the drive would be really short, even with our stops, however it took MUCH longer than we expected.  The weather was great today so that was a big plus!

The first place we planned to stop was The Granite Quarry.  It has great reviews of how beautiful it was, but as we were headed in that direction, Bill also read that it was not recommended to drive to it in a large RV.  The roads in to the quarry are very narrow, steep and curvy.  Top 3 things I try to avoid while driving!  It wasn’t feasible to park it anywhere and unhook the truck so we continued on south.

One side...
the other side

Our first actual stop was Quechee Gorge.  We were not sure where the actual parking to see the gorge was so there was a good sized lot at a shop and restaurant that was relatively empty and we could easily see and walk to the bridge from it.  Which is exactly what we did!  The bridge is across a giant “U” from one side to the other.  Pictures do not do it justice!

Back on the road and starting to get hungry! Bill called ahead to verify there was parking for the RV at Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller NHP and the park does not have parking for tourists but a place across from it allows visitors to park there.  It’s a big space and hardly anyone there and we pulled in one end as we spotted a driveway at the other end.  Surprise!  The far end gate was locked.  We parked under the shade trees and had lunch, then unhooked the truck as I could not make a u-turn towing the truck and positioned us in the direction to get out and parked the truck in front of us to allow maneuvering space should we need it.

Bill and his "entourage"
We walked up by the farm part first and Bill got to pet all the young heifers.  He wished he had some carrots to feed them as they were friendly and nudging him.  We crossed over to the house side of the road.  The caretaker’s house and the barn are now museums.  The barn is HUGE!  The mansion is huge as well and has the old covered area where the carriages drove through and later cars.  The trellis is covered with vines and very beautiful.  The
The barn
mansion is literally on top of the hill so to get far enough to take a photo you are down the hill, but I did the best I could.  Maybe if I was taller???

View from downhill
We tried peeking through the entry side windows but they were windows and storm windows so you couldn’t see or get a decent photo.  Oh well.

The walk did us good and it wasn’t overly hot out.  We stopped again at the cows so Bill could pet and say good-bye.

We hooked the truck back up and were back on the road to Winchester, NH where we snagged the only spot left for 2 nights.  Shady big pull through!  Of course that means no TV!

I got George out and grilled some venison sausage and made some slaw to go with it.  We are steadily working on those peanut butter bars!  I did put a container in the freezer to enjoy down the road!

Time to relax!
