June 11 – Another full day! It was full of laughter and camaraderie with
my cousin Diane and her husband Ty. I
think I met him once before but we really got to spend time with him today and
we all just had such a great time and bonded so well! Ty was a UPS driver and the towns we were
going to were places he drove on his routes.
This was kind of “Bill’s Day” as
he had a list of places and things he wanted to visit and we were going to go
by ourselves, but it was way more pleasurable with them along especially since
they knew the area.
Diane wasn’t going to get here
until about 12:30 so after breakfast we went into New Philly to a used book
store. They had a great selection and we both got 5
books I think. That’s good for us! Then Bill dropped me at Aldi while he went to
Walmart to find a hose nozzle. I breezed
through as I mostly wanted to pick up some produce. I was ready and waiting when he got back, but
no nozzles available. There was an ACE
in Dover so we
stopped there and they were sold out as well.
Guess we will be looking for one as we travel.
Diane came from getting her hair
cut so we went by to pick up Ty and see their house. They have a good size lot and a small but
very nice house with wood floors. She
has a list of things she wants to have done so once they get back from their
trip to Michigan
I think she will get started on it. Been
there, done that! She will be thrilled
with the end but it’s the getting there that wears you down!
Off we headed and lunch was the
first thing on everyone’s list! Ty knew
a couple of places in Newcomerstown and the first was closed so we hit number
2. It was excellent! I had a huge taco salad that was delicious and
the shell was crispy to the end and they all had a Triple BLT supposedly made
with a pound of bacon. Diane and Ty
split one and fries and Bill got a whole one and fries and brought home
half. They had a lot of thick bacon on
them but Bill doesn’t think it was a pound.
We all enjoyed lunch regardless.
Now we had the boosted energy to
trek all over in search of graves and memorials!
Our first stop was the Ohio Historical
Marker in Newcomerstown honoring Cy Young who was born there and lived there
until he left to become a baseball legend.
They had a nice small city park
on the edge of town that they have a larger memorial in the center of a
miniature baseball field. It’s very
nicely taken care of and pretty impressive.
Bill and his main man! |
Time to head on to Cambridge , home of
William (Bill) Boyd, AKA Hopalong Cassidy.
Bill loves Hoppy on the radio and old black and whites. He was VERY excited to visit his town and be
photoed next to his bronze statue. It’s
actually in the lot of an assisted living facility and due to Covid-19, Hoppy
was wearing the appropriate mask! From
there we had no problem finding the location of several memorials. One was for Hoppy, one was a piece of steel
beam from 9-11 with a memorial and one to a soldier who died in Vietnam . All very nicely presented.

Cy Young Headstone |
From there Ty took us to the
cemetery in Pioli where Cy Young is buried.
It’s a small little church with some rather old graves out in the middle
of farm land. He was easy to locate and
there were several tokens left at his headstone. Bill left a coin token as well.
Time to head back and we did see
a couple of Amish men, one in his buggy and one on horseback carrying his lunch
pail. The Amish is this area are known
as the Old Order as they still adhere to the original ways as those in
Sugarcreek and that area are somewhat more modernized.
Diane only had to ask once if we
wanted ice cream! There’s a great little
place on the edge of Tuscarawas so we stopped and she, Bill and I had some but
Ty passed. I had Coffee with chocolate
in it. Yum!
Their house was close by and we
finished our ice cream and chatted and Diane took us
back to the RV. There was a new 5th wheel parked
where the tree limb fell so we have a neighbor.
It was after 6 when we got home and I was still full from lunch and ice
cream. Later Bill had the rest of his
BLT but I only had a few cheese curds and lots of water!

It was a beautiful day and it was
amazing how quickly the city got out and cut up some huge trees that fell last
night along the mail road, Tuscarawas
Ave. The
road was clear when we went to the grocery and when we got home this afternoon it
was all piled neatly along the road. We
also saw some trees down out in the country so it did a bit of destruction for
sure.
Super A rated day!
