June
5 – Bill was up earlier than normal so we were on the road by 9. The first thing Bill did was call the county
park that we were hoping to get a spot in to see what was available. It is a first come basis and there were only
2 empty spots, so it was pretty safe to say they would be gone by the time we
got there. The interstate was closed due
to Mississippi River flooding, therefore we were on mostly 2 lane roads the
entire trip to Omaha . I was so tired of semis on my tail and people
passing on a double line…. And then
there were the other “not so fun” things that make it a not so fun drive.
First
there was a loud glass breaking noise. I
figured my wine glasses had not been secured in the rack, but when Bill got up
to check, one of the ceiling light covers had fallen. Luckily they are super thick glass, maybe
something extra added in the recipe, but it didn’t break. I think we need to tighten them all before
getting back on the road.
Next,
Bill got up to use the bathroom and water was coming out from under the
door. The rug was soaking wet, and the
toilet was overflowing. He said it
appeared the flush pedal got stuck and the pump was on so water just kept
flowing in. He used several towels to
clean it all up and turned off the pump.
The train |
Then
a semi and later a motorhome flashed their headlights at me. At least that is what I was thinking. We had to stop for a long train at a railroad
crossing, so Bill got out and looked all around and didn’t see anything to be
alarmed about. When headed out I got to
thinking, yes, I know that’s dangerous, but maybe something was flapping on the
roof! There was NO where for us to pull
off and Bill
thought there’d be a place in one of the small towns we went
though where we could pull over.
No!
More of the train |
When
we were just a few miles away Bill tried the county park in Papillion again and
it was full. The back up plan was
Cabela’s. I had called them ages ago to
see if they allow parking and they even have a dump station and a water fill
station. So we easily found it but were
not sure about driving around to the back without knowing for sure what was
what! Beside them is a Costco with a
huge empty lot so we stopped and unhooked and
Bill went out on a scouting
mission to make sure we could get in and out.
His mission was a success and we got parked and finally, had a bite to
eat.
Getting closer |
I
went up on the roof to see if there was anything flopping around and it was all
good. So, not sure what the flashing
was
about but I guess it didn’t have anything to do with us.
And we're off.... |
We
had dinner with Don and Barbara Sunamoto.
She and I grew up together in Cartersville ,
VA. They live in Lavista, a burb of Omaha . Our parents were very close friends and we
would go to their house and play while the parents chattered. We went wild mushroom hunting together in the
hills of Virginia . Our mothers spent hours on the phone. My mom was always ironing and holding the phone
with her shoulder. No idea what Inez was
doing! We always had such a great time
when we were together. Too bad they
lived too far to ride a bike to.
Barbara
and Don picked us up for dinner and we went to Dinker’s Bar and
Grill. Their claim to fame is “Home of
Omaha’s BEST Burger”. They had a pretty
decent menu and I’m not a burger person, but I concede that I had maybe the
best burger ever! The Husker Burger, a
cheeseburger topped with hickory smoked bacon, zesty bbq sauce and sautéed onions. They ordered a side of onion rings for me and
they were delish! I love onion rings and
those were great. I even ate my bun,
that’s a rarity! Thank you Don and
Barbara for a wonderful evening out with good food and great company! Barbara, let’s not wait another 50
years! (not that I think we could live
that long) And thank you for my jam and the Dorothy Lynch all in one
condiment! Love you!
Bill
did a quickie wash on the front of the RV and plans to do better tomorrow when
we stop for fuel!
