October
5 – Bill got up at 3AM because he thought he heard something outside. I got up with him and there was an RV parked
in front of us and one behind. Not sure
if that’s what he heard. We took a
minute to look at the sky as the clouds had cleared from when we looked before
going to bed. It was so beautiful. Huge stars lit up the sky! That’s what we expect to see when we get to
Marfa in a week! We went back to bed and
I got up at 7 and Bill got up at 8.
There wasn’t a lot to get ready to pull out once we had a bit of
breakfast.
We saved about 50 miles by taking a cut off from Deming to Hatch where we hit I-25 north. Carole showed Bill where it was on the map. Only 2 lanes but super smooth and nice drive and not much traffic. The main street was lined with Ad
memorabilia. Bill got some photos when I pulled off the road. Hatch is also know for its chilis and there were lots of ristras hung at shops along the road also.
Today
we didn’t have an exact plan when we left.
Since we will be in Albuquerque with water and electric only for 5
nights, I wanted a full hook up tonight to get the bedding all done and the
rest of our laundry so we’d be fine until we left there. Bill’s first call was too close to Albuquerque as they were
full. He left a message at one place
that didn’t call back and he found a spot in Truth or Consequences. It is a full hook up pull thru for $35. That’s a deal! Once we arrived they took Passport America and it
was only $14.50. That’s a REAL
deal! Most of the sites are full time
spots and the RVs look a little worn but he keeps 6 – 8 larger pull thru spots
for over nighters. Later in the day
there was another big rig behind us.
We
had lunch in and then made a run to Wal-Mart for a few things. I needed ice trays as the icemaker overflows
into the ice bucket because the slide is tilted. We end up with a big ice slab in the
bottom. Only got a few grocery items til
I can get to a regular grocery. Looks
like I need some meat! Not much in the
freezer but sausage, a pot roast and a cube steak! That Wal-Mart had covered parking all out
front and then I realized it was solar panels.
What a unique and smart thing to do!
We
spent a good part of the afternoon cleaning and doing laundry. The tech who did our radiator left some
grease spots on the carpets and the cover of the driver’s seat, so I got those
cleaned. The floors were a mess so I
cleaned those and Bill did the windshield inside and the dash. I did 3 loads of wash and Bill folded. We took the drawers out of the kitchen
counter and got our 8-10 things that had fallen out of the back of the
drawers. I weeded some things out to
maybe remedy the problem.
The
campground owner suggested a Mexican restaurant across the street so once we
showered and dressed we headed there but it was closed. I checked Yelp and found a home style place a
couple of miles into town. We both had
chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and white gravy! We both chose the side salad as well and the
meal also came with a veggie of the day – corn.
I passed on that. It was so tasty
and something that we don’t see or get very often.
It
was dark when we got home. Bill turned
on the TV and made some brownies. Then
he did up the dishes from the day and the brownies. I worked on the blog but the internet comes
and goes so don’t know if I’ll get anything posted.
Time
for reading a while, then on to Albuquerque and the Balloon Fiesta
tomorrow! Yee haa!!
