We're not in Kansas anymore!!!!!

June 16 -   We left at 9 this morning.  Our first roadside attraction today was in Goodland, KS.  We got to see the World’s Largest Easel.  Bill was disappointed that I saw it first.  It’s in the Rotary Park.  Luckily, next door was a shopping center that we could easily get into and out of.  The stop didn’t take long then on to Burlington, CO.  WE’RE NOT IN KANSAS ANYMORE!  Once we arrived we were another hour earlier, in the Mountain Zone, but where the heck are the mountains?
I wanted to stop here and see and ride on the Kit Carson County Carousel at the fairgrounds.  The fact that we gained an hour meant we had 90 minutes to wait once we got there until they opened up.  Rides are on the half hour.  So we had an EARLY lunch and wrote postcards we’d gotten the last couple of days.  Of course we were riders on the first ride of the day.  There were only 5 of us I think.

This is a PTC #6.  Made by Philadelphia Toboggan Company, the 6th
one, in 1905, it is a National Historic Landmark.  One you can actually ride.  It’s the original paint on all of the original animals and seats with only touch up in the restoration process.  The same goes for all the panels around the inside center.  There are 46 hand-carved animals including zebras, horses of course, camels, dogs, reindeer, lions, goats, giraffes
and other strange animals.  At tops speed it goes 12 miles per hour and they give you a long ride for $.25.  Music is played by the original Wurlitzer Monster Military band organ.  They have 12 different music scrolls and rotate them.  An interesting note, the city council voted to by the “used” carousel in 1928 for $1,200 and the citizens did not re-elect them.  Only 74 of these were made and this is the only one that does not go up and down.  Only 14-15 of the 74 are still in existence.

They have a small museum that we visited also for $1 each.  I did buy a couple of things in the gift shop, small, unobtrusive items that I can fit in someplace!

Time to head north and the further we drove the windier it got.  We had detour in one town and for the most part the road was flat and straight.  We arrived in Chappell, NE, yes, we were not in CO very long, around 2:45.  It was nice to have the rest of the afternoon to relax.  Bill had to wash the windshield AGAIN.  There are sure a lot of bugs out here.  While he was outside I made meatloaf and roasted rutabaga for dinner and brownies for dessert.  Tomorrow night we might be dry camping so at least we have leftover meatloaf!

We watched one of our favorite movies, “Chicago”, after dinner.
