Bill's First Day at Ferry Hill

June 14 – The intern ranger brought our phone cord over around 8:30 and had more papers for us to sign.  He’s a college graduate and through some kind of grant was able to work for 3 months.  Bill hooked the cord up and we got a dial tone.  The ranger called his phone and it works going out but we didn’t have a single call all day.

This morning I took Bill to the VC and on the way we saw 2 woodchucks.  I need to start carrying the camera.  I then headed into Hagerstown to Aldi’s and Target.  I stopped at 2 health food stores looking for coconut flour but none was to be had.  The last stop gave me some places to try in Frederick when we go in that direction.  I used the Garmin to get around and didn’t have a single problem.  While I was in Target I called Karen and we had a nice talk.  We haven’t talked in a month so it was good to catch up some.

I will have to say the scenery in this area is beautiful.  There’s no such thing as a straight or flat road once you get off the interstates.  I took an alternate road home and thought maybe I had chosen the wrong road.  It got very narrow, where you’d have to get off the road to let another pass and was sled ride hilly.  I’d be at the top and couldn’t see the road over the front of the truck.  After many twists and turns I came to the intersection I was hoping to find and safely made it home.  I unloaded most of my purchases and made a salad for lunch that I hastily scarfed down so I wouldn’t be late picking Bill up.  I was anxious to see if he had any visitors today and he had 2 and there was a family of 3 coming in as we left.  I’m sure the weekends will be busier.

After putting away the rest of my purchases we went for our first bike ride on the towpath.  Not real far, just to scope out the campsites, so we went from end to end, saw some trash we needed to pick up later since we didn’t bring bags.  We met some nice local people who winter in Tucson.  Later Bill washed some of the bugs off the RV while I planted some flower seeds and made a quinoa salad for dinner.  We went for another ride after dinner and Bill talked a long time with the Boy Scout leaders for a group that will be in 3 sites for 2 nights.  They camp one weekend a month all year long, rain, shine or snow!  We took bags and filled 1 with trash people left in the fire pits.

Bill did dishes and I wrote some postcards and we watched a bit of TV.
