Trip to Taos

October 5 – Can’t believe I didn’t get up until almost 10!!! I woke up twice and heard how hard it was raining and thought I’ll just lay here a while longer and went back to sleep.  Needless to say we didn’t dilly-dally once we did get up!  I cooked sausage and put out pineapple with some table grapes and we shared a blueberry muffin.

North Pueblo in Taos
It was still a little drizzly when we left for Taos.  Then just before the town there was road work and we had to wait our turn to use the single lane.  We went straight through town to the Pueblo.  We were hesitant since it was still not a sunny day
Church entry with church behind
but we parked and paid our fee and did the tour with a young man.  They are student volunteers who give about a 30 minutes tour and they are paid only by gratuity.  He has one semester left for his AS and then will go away to college to finish.  He is fluent in his native language, Tewa.  We all asked him all kinds of questions.  He had no problem answering whether it related to the Pueblo, his culture, his education.  What a nice young man!  I asked if he was 100% native and he’s 75%.  His grandmother married out of the tribe so he’s 1/4 Caucasian.

After the tour we were on our own to walk around the Pueblo and visit the various merchants who sell from their family homes.   They make and sell pottery, jewelry, paintings, ornaments, all kinds of crafts.  Some sell baked goods they bake in horno ovens.  They are outdoor dome shaped adobe ovens.  We learned how they work as well.  They also use them to bake the pottery.  I saw a lot of nice things but only bought one Christmas tree ornament, a storyteller wearing a lime top!

After
Before
We stopped in Taos for lunch at The Gorge Bar and Grill.  I had a delicious Beet Salad with goat cheese and Bill had buffalo sliders.  Since we had a late breakfast we didn’t need a huge lunch today.  The restaurant is on the back side of the Taos Plaza, dating back over 300 years.  We walked part of it and visited some shops but didn’t buy anything.

On the way out of town we stopped at Albertson’s for some wine I am looking for but they didn’t have it so we headed on back to Espanola for Bill to get his script refilled and then to CVS to pick mine up.  We got home just after 6 and it was getting dark out.  I had taken burgers out of freezer this morning so we had a simple dinner of burgers and leftover broccoli slaw.

I watched Grey’s Anatomy and turned the TV over to Bill then.  I spent some time on the computer and worked on photos for a while.
