Busy but boring 4th

July 4Happy Independence Day! We dressed in our red, white and blue and went for our walk before having omelets and an orange for breakfast. We are out of milk so there wasn’t a lot of choice. Bill headed right out to see if any of the sites were ready to be raked and I loaded up the wash in the truck and went to do laundry. I was lucky that someone was just finishing using the washers when I arrived so could get my 2 loads in. I read outside under the overhang as it was hot in there from the dryers going.

We had to drive shuttle at noon so I did 2 batches in the dryer at the RV and hung the rest out in batches too. All was done when we left but the last line full. We ate sandwiches at about 11:15 took water bottles and an apple each when it was time to leave. Kam called to update me on her new furniture search and paint colors and lawn equipment. I know they are really excited that it’s only a couple of weeks away. They will really need their vacation in August.

The first hour was really slow and boring but the last 2 we keep on the move. A lot of the early boaters were ready to go by then. It’s a lot cooler when you keep moving. When it was slow we sat in the parking lot and chatted some with the rangers as they passed through. The people are really appreciative of the ride, especially once they’ve been out in the sun and have to walk UP the long ramp to their car or boat trailer. It wasn’t nearly as busy as everyone had expected but I think we will make up for it over the weekend. We had a large group of campers come in and they brought a lot of beer and liquor. We have some tent violations and multiple campers on sites that have been told to move also. That is the ranger’s job but we are the tattletales. Eventually they will see them but we let them know what to expect.

The plan was to go to the casino once we were done driving today but we were hot and I told Bill we could pass this week. We’re going into Durango tomorrow and Farmington on Friday, so that’s enough going for the week. We read and I made some scrubbies and we folded the laundry. Nothing strenuous. When dinner time rolled around I managed to get motivated and made some roasted potatoes with rosemary that I had dried and it had gotten really windy out so we didn’t want to bother with the grill. I got out the George Foreman and grilled hot links and brat burgers. I had beets and Bill had leftover broccoli and we were full. Bill had commented that there would be no potato salad but at least I did make potatoes so he was happy.

After dinner we drove up to Rosa to let Harlan know we’d be gone tomorrow and Friday as he will need to check on our sites that need raked and he will take Xena out for us. The air was really cooling off fast so I was ready to get back inside and made a cappuccino to warm me up. Yum! We watched the Macy’s Fireworks show in NY since there would be none here or anywhere close. I did have a few sparklers we could have done but forgot about them. Oh well, next year!

July 5 - I never got around to writing yesterday so now things might be forgotten. The highlights were we went to Durango and didn’t get home til 5:30 and the 2 things we went for we didn’t get. Bill’s shoes were not ready from being repaired and the shop where I was having a new band put on my watch, well she was closed for the day. So we ran a list of errands and checked out some more shops in downtown and had a really good lunch at Carver’s Brew House. Bill had a buffalo burger and I and a lamb burger filled with goat cheese and topped with lettuce and tomato and tzatziki. My side was cottage cheese for lack of a healthier choice. Bill took the home fries. We fueled up and went to the little used book store but left empty handed. We got the good specials at Albertson’s: 18 oz blueberries for $2.99 and 12 oz of raspberries for $2.99 and petite sirloin steaks for $3.00 a pound but we hand to buy about 5.5 pounds. I repackaged them and was maneuvering things to fit them in the freezer. We’ll be good on steaks for the rest of the summer.

Once we got home and unloaded the truck we checked all of the sites. We only had 7 empty. For dinner we had a rotisserie chicken, canned corn and celery chunks, mozzarella cheese and tomatoes in an Italian dressing. After dinner I put a pie in the oven. It was a triple berry pie from the pie crust box. I had the blueberries and raspberries I just bought and some frozen blackberries I brought with me. I made a single serving one for Harlan for taking care of Xena for us. We had pie before bed after it cooled and it was really good. I need to keep that recipe.

It looked like rain out from the time we got home. Parts of the mountains we couldn’t see due to the gray line of rain and it finally made its way to us and boy, did it pour. At least there was no wind, so that was fine.

Had to get to bed a little early since we had to get up so early in the morning.
