May 17 – Leaving this
summer is a bit bittersweet for us. Since having had to put our dog
Xena to sleep just days ago, it has been a very sad week of mixed
emotions. If Xena enjoyed anything in life it was riding in the
truck and sniffing every blade of grass at every truck stop, rest
area and campground we visit on our trips. At 14 she had a lot of
miles on her, both literally and figuratively. It’s a real
transition after 3 summers on the road not to have her in the truck
with us. Even Molly has behaved different today.
However, we did manage to
have a rather uneventful day, which in the Chambers house is something to
celebrate. We didn’t manage to leave as early as planned, but then
I don’t think we’ve ever managed it. After loading the last of
the groceries and electronics and a final stop at Wal-mart we were on
the road 8:45.
The route today was to
Daytona and north on I-95. Traffic was “normal” and we breezed
through Jacksonville. We did a mid-morning break at a rest area
north of Daytona and had lunch at the Welcome Station in Georgia.
Then it was just a couple hours to our campground, New Green Acres RV
Park in Walterboro, SC. It’s right off the interstate and very
convenient with huge pull thru spaces and really tall pine trees.
The only negative is the office lady gave the wrong directions, which
we figured out before we got into trouble and then Bill said she
wasn’t the most pleasant person to be greeting people. We were
also afraid to attempt to sit at our picnic table for fear we’d go
down with it.
After dinner we walked
around the park checking out all the Class A’s. I know it was hard
for Bill not to have Xena to walk and see other people with their
dogs. He said how lucky they were, but he had all the luck for over
14 years, so now it is someone else’s turn.
Got my wifi hotspot on my
phone working after a call to ATT, so hope I’m good to go for the
summer.
Life is never the same after losing your "child". A year later it's still hard on us to do things Sable enjoyed. However, she's back with my Mom where she belongs. Be careful, and enjoy.
