September 6 – When we got up this morning there were 2 buck deer across from us near another RV. What a nice way to start the day. It was a little cool but nice out. We had smoothies this morning and managed to get on the road just after 8. Traffic wasn’t much better than last night until we got on the highway heading north to Nebraska.
We took our morning break at a nice rest area and it had warmed up by then. This was a mostly just driving day. We stopped at the Colorado Welcome Center for our lunch and finished off some chicken salad I made. Something shifted in the roll up storage compartment in the hutch and we couldn’t get it opened so I had to leave it until later.
Buffalo Bill's Ranch |
The place we planned to get fuel was no longer there so we stopped 12 miles into NE and got our fuel. Bill changed all the times as we crossed into Central Time. That made it a problem getting to visit Buffalo Bill’s Ranch in La Platt as they closed at 4 and we pulled up right at 4. At least we got to see the house and the huge barn. It really is a peaceful place, we could see why he chose it for his “get away” when we was doing his Wild West shows.
Bill and Buff |
We got to drive on the Lincoln Highway, which is route 30. We took it from the ranch AKA Scout’s Rest Ranch east and into North Platte where we stopped at the Ft. Cody Trading Post. It was just tourist stuff but the building was neat as was the buffalo and giant Bill Cody out front. We got some post cards and Bill’s magnet and got back on I-80.
We spent the night at the Lafayette Park Campground in Gothenburg, NE. It only had 15 or so RV spots among the trees and 5-6 tent spots. The caretakers live on the property and there were only 2 other RV’s there. Xena and I took a walk and got to see 3 wild turkeys and a pretty horse. Bill joined up with us and we crossed over a canal on one side through a little covered bridge to the Lake Helen Recreation area. We spotted a large dog off leash, so we had to hurry back so we didn’t chance any issues with the dog.
Tonight's camp spot |
For dinner I used George and grilled steaks to go with the leftover potato salad and mixed veggies. It was quick and easy and few dishes left for Bill to wash. I was able to get the cabinet up enough to put a mug under it, then used 2 wooden spoons to maneuver things around that had shifted and got it open. Great! I took out the culprit so hope I don’t have to deal with that again.
We both showered in the communal shower and it wasn’t bad. Bill didn’t want to use our shower since we won’t be able to empty the tanks for a couple more nights.
I did a few emails and tried to book Jean’s airline ticket but the internet was really slow and so I had to finally just give it up until hopefully tomorrow.
