I took a sleep aid last night and boy I slept well. Didn’t wake up til 9 and as soon as my feet hit the floor Kam called. We had a nice chat and then I made buckwheat pancakes and turkey bacon with fruit and an egg over easy for Bill for breakfast. Our neighbor, Mary Jane stopped over to tell us about a festival in Savannah but we needed to go for finger printing and to the library so I could print some emailed forms.
Once we showered and dressed we headed to Tybee. I had checked about the post office and found it was open til 1 so I bubble wrapped Dell and wrote a note to Jeff and Ryan at West Orlando Custom Build about how ill Dell was. I was hoping for a priority mail box her size but there wasn’t one. The super nice postman found a box they had received supplies in and gave it to me with some old newspaper so I got Dell boxed and sent. Good thing I brought Toby and he’s performing well.
Next was going back to the police station to get fingerprinted. I made sure I told the dispatcher that we were there yesterday but sent home in lieu of another person who came in AFTER us. He got someone there immediately and he was super nice. He asked we wanted to write up a complaint about the officer yesterday. We declined but I got the impression he’d had trouble with that officer and wanted more official ammunition. He said the officer was wrong not to take care of us first since the other guy was not an emergency. Bill took forever to to his prints as his right hand looks like it’s missing a lot of swirls on his fingers. Then the officer let us see inside the jail cells, they have 4. They still have the barred doors like in the old west. The two big cells housed 4 and had a block wall with a shower stall and a half block wall with a stainless steel toilet. The 2 other cells were smaller for those needing isolation. That was a highlight for Bill to see the jail. It’s a very small police station and he said they expected a big weekends of drunk partiers.
The library didn’t open til 2 so we checked out the crowds along the mail road that is the closest to the beach and found a place for a light lunch. We both had salads but mine was blackened mahi mahi and Bill stuck with chicken. We shared an order of hush puppies.
By now the library was open and they have 6 computers available to use and we got in before the crowd so could have at least 30 minutes and then they ask you to give up to someone waiting. I only needed their computer to print from so we each did our email and Bill got to check on the Indians and we both printed a few things. Bill printed our work schedule for next week. He’s getting trained in the Visitor Center and as a Guide. I am getting trained at the Entrance Station and Visitor Center. I did learn from one of the other volunteers that there is DSL in the Entrance Station and once we get our keys we can go in and use it after closing. Maybe if I’m working out there I can take Dell or Toby and use it when I don’t have a guest.
We were going to Staples but thought we better get back and check on the pets and we’d go in that direction for dinner and then to Staples and check out what else it out that way. As we turned into the RV section there was a female deer grabbing a snack by our neighbor’s RV. There were also people fishing on the water in front of us so we need to check on licenses and what kind of bait we’re going to need. Bill’s gonna have to get used to eating more fish, ha, ha!
I thought we could maybe improve on the cooling of the fridge by putting pieces of the window foil that we use on top of the slide under the slide cover. These fridges just don’t perform well in the heat and it’s only going to get worse here. I took photos of the bad tires as I looked up a phone number to try for them on Tuesday to see about getting reimbursement. We put out our little American flag and watered the plants. My tomato plant is blooming like crazy and we got two more ripe ones today. They’re only grape tomatoes but at least it’s here instead of Ocoee. I used some of my basil in the spaghetti sauce last night.
A look into the travels of Kelly and her husband Bill. When they travel together it's in their RV.

May 27 - Settling In At Ft. Pulaski
My grape tomato plant travelled well and at least we're getting some fresh home grown tomatoes |
I thought I would sleep really well but I had such a headache when I went to bed that I didn’t sleep well at all. I set the alarm just to test it for when we have to get up for “work”. It did fine. While I got breakfast Bill was out putting the slide stabilizers on and getting things out and ready to set up. We put out the cactus and the carpet and rope lights. Put the table and bench covers on, our clothesline up and out grill table and grill out. Bad news for today, when Bill took the bikes off the truck the sprocket on my bike was bent pretty bad. I called a place on Tybee Island and he said they break when you try to bend them back and because I have Murray, it would not be worth it to fix, to just go to Walmart and buy a new one for $90. So we took a hammer to it and then pliers and put the chain back on and it does a bit of a click sound but seems to be fine.
One of the ships/barges passing in front of our spot |
It was 6 by the time we got home so Bill put the groceries in the RV while I walked Xena, then I made Italian sausage meatballs with sauce and spaghetti and salad for dinner. Bill was pleased. We folded the last load of laundry then Bill watched TV and I started my journal for the last 2 days.

May 26 - The Day From Hell
What started out to be a smooth sailing day, suddenly went bad. For maybe the first time we set a departure time and made it, 8:00. We got up at 6:30 and were pulling out and waving goodbye to one of our favorite campgrounds and to some of the nicest people we’ve met and headed to Savannah, GA. We will be volunteering at Ft. Pulakski National Monument on the coast outside of Savannah for June and July. That should be an adventure in itself. We planned to check in with the volunteer coordinator by 4.
We were on track until close to noon. 2 guys in a pickup pulled up beside me and we indicating a problem. I thought on our morning pit stop we had left something open or unsecured, so we immediately pulled over. The guys pulled in ahead of us and said there was smoke coming from our driver side RV tires. The men all looked and thought it was either tires or wheel bearings. They said there was an exit about 6 miles up the road and they would follow with their roof lights flashing and to go no more than 40 – 45 mph. We exited at Johanna, SC. I have to say, that was the longest 6 miles I’ve ever driven. As soon as we got off the exit there was a closed gas station we could pull into. The guys pulled and they all looked and by now the tires had swelled up and were actually rubbing together and they figured that was causing the smoke. Across the street was a closed cafĂ© and an open gas station. We were discussing our roadside assistance when we all looked directly in front of us and there was an oasis in the desert, a Goodyear Road Service garage. The guys said they didn’t know it was there. Bill walked over and caught the owner as he was leaving for lunch so he came over and said it wasn’t the bearings but the tires. So we thanked our good Samaritans and slowly drove over to the Goodyear. The good news was he could fix the problem, the bad news was he only had one tire to fit our RV. So we had him put the spare on and we put the bad tires that only had 12,000 miles on them in the bathroom in the RV. Yuck, it smelled like burnt rubber.
He told us in the next town, Newberry, SC was about 16 miles and they had a Goodyear store so we pulled into his lot and ate a quick lunch and took the back road to Newberry. Those were the nicest people. We put Molly in her carrier and Xena on the leash and waited inside while they put 4 new Firestone tires on, since they didn’t have any of the size Goodyear we needed. They moved the new Goodyear to the spare. With our last tire experience, we felt if 2 had separated belts it would not be long before the other two had separated belts so we went ahead and got 4. Now we had 4 tires in the bathroom. I plan to at least get compensation for the 2 bad ones. So we ended up calling ahead to the park and letting our contact, Ron Calhoun, know that we would be there pretty late. He gave us the gate code and instructions of where our spot would be to park and who to see the next day.
Luckily we had some water and snacks still in the truck so we only stopped for fuel and headed on to Savannah. It was about 8 when we pulled into our camping spot. It’s considered the new VIP (volunteers in park) campground and has 4 spots, all with full hookup, concrete pad, picnic table and bench. Really it’s a nice place. We are directly across from the Coast Guard Station and a short walk to the water. We can see the barges and boats coming and going.
We did what we had to in setting up and I microwaved us 2 Smart One dinners. I was beat. We were on the road 12 hours. Our one set of neighbors came over to meet us. They will only be here another week and a half. There are 2 other single men and one had to go home for a medical emergency and the other is on his time off. There is another couple in the old spots who are leaving on Sunday. There is no outside lighting so it’s good thing we have our rope lights and cactus to put out.
On the way in we saw 6 deer in front of the administrative office and an armadillo at our sight.
It was really not a good day, but we were safe and blessed that those guys stopped us or things could have gotten really bad for us.

May 24 - Another Great Day in Cherokee
Bill and Xena along the river |
Part of the campground |
We stopped by the theatre and got our tickets to see “Pirates” at 7 so didn’t have much time at home. Walked and fed the pets. Stopped at the office to check for our package, but no luck. We sat outside and discussed what to do if it didn’t arrive tomorrow and the lady brought it over. The owner goes into town to get the mail at her leisure and finally brought it. Bill was literally a HAPPY CAMPER.
Neither of us was hungry so I made us each a ½ sandwich to take to the movie with a snack bar. At about 7:30 Bill got us a drink and we had our “dinner” while we watched the movie. It was as good as the other “Pirates”. The 3D was good but I am not really comfortable with those glasses on. We waited through the longest credits ever to see the extra ending and it was good! No hints here….
Didn’t get back til 9:45 and Xena did a howl to let us know she heard us pull in. I made a strawberry shortcake for Bill but I went with a bowl of watermelon. My favorite!

May 23 - Great Smoky Mountains National Park & Blue Ridge Parkway
Right up the road was the Mingus Mill. We both like old mills so stopped there and it’s just off the road and a short path to it. The mill is powered by a very long water sluice that empties into a turbine that runs the millstones. It’s currently having a huge pipe that was original (125 years) replaced but come June they will be demonstrating again how it milled corn and wheat. I bought a small bag of the cornmeal and made cornbread using the recipe on it and boy, was it good. Should have bought more.
It was nice to have an hour or so to sit by the river and read. The sound of the river is so relaxing and the weather has been perfect. Warm enough in the day and cooling off at night. We finally used the little Flame Disk grilling thing I bought someplace on closeout. It cooks for 40 minutes and is about 12-14 inches in diameter. We put it on a flat rock under the ground grill at the site and Bill cooked pork chops for tomorrow night and a burger for him and a salmon burger for me for tonight. We had corn on the cob and I had some 3 bean salad and we both had cornbread with the pumpkin butter we got today at the visitor’s center. Yum! We ate outside on our picnic table and felt like real campers.
After walking Xena we made our trek to McDonald’s to try and post blogs, make phone calls and do email. Dell was really not doing well tonight and Bill used Toby. I didn’t get the blogs posted as I need to get the photos I want to used uploaded first and that was a problem. Maybe tomorrow. When we got back to the RV Bill realized he left his cap in the booth, but with no cell reception we couldn’t call to check on it. Will have to stop by tomorrow when we’re out. Also did not get our package from Kerry with Bill’s wallet and the pet meds. This is not good, only two more days to get it before we leave.
For a late dessert we had some strawberry shortcake, another yum! Watched some TV, read and now journaling.
We didn’t manage to get up as early as we had planned but after a fairly quick breakfast we headed into town to fuel up and then on our way to Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. We only went a short way on both. We went to the park first and went to the first visitor center, Oconaluftee. It was a nice new center that’s only been open for 8 weeks. The exhibit was excellent, telling about why and how the park came to be and of the purchasing and moving of all the residents in the area. Behind the visitor center is the Mountain Farm Museum, which is a collection of period farm buildings that would have been there when the park was founded and moved there to one central location from all over. We were disappointed there were no costumed interpreters or animals but they did have an excellent garden. In the visitor center an employee questioned Ocoee on Bill’s cap and most think it refers to Ocoee River in TN, but Bill said it’s outside of Orlando and the guy said he knew where it was, he used to live there. Apparently he used to work for Sysco and lived in The Hammocks for 6 years. He retired and has been in Maggie Valley for 5 years I think. Small world.

There we turned around and headed back to the Beginning, or maybe the end of the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is just inside the border of the park. We drove it to the exit for Maggie Valley and then took Rt 19 back into Cherokee. Stopped at an overlook and ate our picnic lunch. Some of the overlooks are pretty nice but some need some tree trimming to really get to see the view. We went through 4 short tunnels, 2 of which the RV would not have made it, so we know not to plan to take it on the Parkway.

May 22 - To Fish or Not To Fish
Morning Fishing |
Afternoon Fishing |
Bill wasn’t interested in having the trout for dinner since I’d taken chicken out so after I cleaned them I put them in the freezer. Then it was time to get dinner going. Parmesan chicken, whole wheat rotini with red sauce and butternut squash. It was cooler outside than in so we sat out and read for a while to cool off before taking Xena on her last walk of the day. I put a load of wash in and showered while Bill did his dishes. Then it’s TV, a Jesse Stone movie.

May 21 - A Day Out In Cherokee
What a fun day! We were up a little earlier and had ham/cheese toast with cantaloupe for breakfast. Got our showers and took Xena for a long walk and spent time visiting with fellow campers. These are all really friendly people and they are all interested in my grape tomato plant. They can’t believe how big it is and how many tomatoes it has. I’ve discussed gardening with a couple people. The women all talk about that I drive the RV. They say I’m a better woman than they are and that if it were up to them to drive they wouldn’t go anywhere. Bill says I’m the talk of the park.
After lunch we went into town to the Museum of the Cherokee Indian. Following a short intro movie, you follow the trail of the Cherokee from their belief of inception to the Trail of Tears when they were moved to the west. The Cherokee that hid in the mountains and refused to leave became the Eastern Band of Cherokee, while those who were moved west are the Western Band. They say there are no records of who is related to whom from each band. We spend some time in the gift and made some phone calls from the car since we haven’t had service since we were in town yesterday.
Next we went on our search of the painted bears. There were originally 20 but the lady at the Visitor Center told us there were only 18 still out as a bus hit one and it’s be repaired, and the one in front of their building had been stored while some work was being done. We got a map of where they all were. We managed 6 within walking distance of the car and then we drove to the others. We managed to find all of the locations but found there were two others missing in action. The last one is in the park on an island and we saw it but will go back another day to get the last photo. Each bear is painted differently, some for where they are displayed, such as the one in Veterans Park is a Patriotic Bear and the one at Museum is Sequoyah Bear since he “invented” the Cherokee alphabet. The different artists all had different ideas and no two are even similar.
It was time to head back to the RV for a while to feed Xena and Molly and take Xena out. After the walk I had a glass of wine and we read til it was time to leave for dinner. Bill had talked to the campground host and she recommended 2 places in Cherokee. One was a buffet, so that was out. The other was Paul’s. Most of the menu was fried, which I love, but I had the beef tips and Bill had a steak. It was really pretty good but we should not have ordered the fried pickles. They were good but too much grease.
After dinner we stopped at McDonald’s so I could do some email and load the blogs I did last night. Bill did his email as I had both laptops going and Dell stopped on me 5-6 times.
On the way home we saw what Bill said was a white tail deer that was huge. I saw it last night in the dark and its head was so big I thought it was a cow that got loose from someplace. It was in the exact same spot and had some kind of collar on so we guess it was owned by someone. I will try to get a picture next time. It was getting dark out and there was a car behind us tonight.
Xena was howling when she heard the truck pull up and ready for another walk. They had their treats and we watched a bit of TV while I did my blogs.

May 20 - Checking Out Cherokee
Our River |
Bridge across our river at the campground entry |
I made orange chicken for dinner with brown rice. Bill wanted one of my home grown tomatoes with his dinner and I had leftover broccoli. Dessert was watermelon and 4 gingersnaps. I left Bill to walk Xena and do up the dishes while I drove into Cherokee to the McDonald’s to use the wifi. I took both laptops as Dell again kept shutting down and Toshiba has a short battery life, but I did manage to upload some photos and do my emails and set up the blog for Kam to tweak due to my lack of time and computer problems.
Made a quick stop at the Food Lion for a few more items and was trying to get back to the RV before dark as I don’t like driving at night by myself on those dark curvy roads. I got back just after 9 and it was dark, but no problems. Put my stuff away, made a cappuccino and typed up my journal.

May 19 - Arrived at Cherokee
We were up at 7:30 after a restless night. We hadn’t considered it had cooled down a lot from home and left a couple of windows open and it was cold out. We got out the extra blanket but I really didn’t sleep well. I made a good breakfast and we didn’t have much to pack up since we didn’t hook up the sewer or have cable. We were on the road at 8:30 again, must be our designated time.
Traffic heading towards Atlanta was not too bad until we got on 285 and there had been an accident or something and it took us over 30 minutes to get about 4 miles. We managed to stop for fuel and break stop at the same time. Then we stopped for lunch and on to Cherokee. The roads took a definite turn to hilly and curvy but it was 2 lane or more almost all the way. We arrived at River Valley Campground, which is on the reservation around 3. We were supposed to have a back in spot on the river but IF we could have angled into it, it would have been tough to get out and around the curve to leave. It really was not a very deep spot. So we looked at some others and took a pull thru right across from the river so we can hear it and just walk over. The campground is in a valley along the Oconaluftee River. It’s stocked with trout and we can either fish here or at some of the ponds up on the road.
We mostly got set up. We put out our carpet, put the plants on the picnic table and got one chair out. The ground was too hard to put our banners up but we put our new kokopelli stone out that has our names on it. When we were setting up the plants a couple came by and asked if we’d like some fresh trout he had on ice. I jumped at that, so Bill followed them to their RV and brought back a cooler of 10 fish. Bill did a great job of cleaning them and I put 3 packages in the freezer and we had the rest for supper. Yum! I had forgotten to take something out of the freezer and was going to go with orange chicken from Trader Joe’s but this was better. Made some whole wheat rotini with a cream cheese sauce and broccoli. Bill thinks we have broccoli every night so guess I better get some different veggies tomorrow. We walked down to return the cooler and that section is year round people. Well they don’t live there year round but most leave their RV’s in place and have built porches to them and nice awnings. It’s like a little neighborhood. It’s really nice there and we met some of the neighbors and everyone was really nice. Lots come from Florida for the summer to escape the heat.
I took Xena for a walk after dinner and her new leash broke and she almost got away from me. We saw 2 geese along the river with their 2 babies. When we got back I fixed as best I could. It’s the nice one with a flashlight and holder for the poop bags. Bill did the dishes while we were gone and then we got the TV’s all hooked up to the cable. Our little flat connector that goes in the window to the bedroom works perfectly but it took us some time to get the big TV up and running. It’s never easy as the wiring is a mess in this RV. We settled in to watch the season ending of The Mentalist for 2 hours and then when Bill went to brush his teeth before bed there was no water but I could hear it running outside. Oh no, what now? The elbow connector ruptured so he had to just hook it straight in and not shut the compartment door til he checks if he has another one or we get one tomorrow. At least we have water again!
We have NO cell service or Internet here so it will be a long week! We’re too low in the valley. I’m hoping to type up my blogs and we’ll get to a wifi zone tomorrow and I can post.

May 18 - Headed to NC
The plan was to be on the road at 8, but true to form, it was 8:30. It took an hour to load the last items, unhook the electric, remove the wheel covers, air up 2 of the RV tires and get on the road. The day was rather uneventful. We stopped once for fuel, twice to get PB2 and arrived at Twin Oaks RV Park in Elko, GA around 3. It was right off the interstate and was a pretty nice park. As we were pulling in, Bill went to get out his wallet in case he needed ID to check in and realized he didn’t bring it. Oops! I told him I’d call Kerry to Priority Mail it to Cherokee since we’d be there a week. Once we got all set up and Bill wanted to give Xena and Molly their flea meds. I know I made sure we had all the necessary meds from the vet for the time we would be gone and put them in the RV. I hunted all over and couldn’t find them. So I told Kerry to send the meds left at home with Bill’s wallet. I think we’re becoming mentally deficient.
We walked Xena a couple of times and chatted with various neighbors. I made roast beef with gravy over baked potatoes and zucchini for dinner. We both showered in the bathhouse since I have my herb garden and tomato plant in the shower and it’s a pain to move them for one night. It wasn’t really such a long day but tiring so Bill was in bed by 10 and I did some blogging until 11. Well I tried to do some. My computer kept shutting down like it was overheating, so I finally gave up on Dell and went to Toshiba since we had WIFI. If it keeps it up we will check on a place to have it looked at in Cherokee. Not good!!!
